People Power Party Criticizes Democratic Party's Adoption of Party Line to Abolish Supplementary Investigation Rights

The People Power Party (PPP) criticized the Democratic Party (DP) on the 25th after the DP adopted the abolition of prosecutors' supplementary investigation rights as its party line, and following the resignation offer by Justice Minister Chung Chung-sim. In a Facebook post on the 25th, PPP Floor Leader Kweon Seong-dong stated that the ruling party hardliners' confirmation of the party line to abolish these rights was a complete victory, defining the move as the "starting signal for a lame duck presidency." Representative Jang Dong-hyuk argued on Facebook that the DP's adoption of this party line could lead to the dismantling of the prosecution service.

In a commentary, PPP Senior Deputy Spokesperson Park Seong-hoon pointed out that Minister Chung should have responded by publicly recommending the exercise of veto power. Park added that avoiding responsibility by submitting a resignation letter is an act of abandoning the duties of the Justice Minister.

Justice Minister Chung Chung-sim reiterated on the 25th that he has no intention of continuing his duties. Regarding reports of his resignation offer, the Ministry of Justice released a statement denying that he had actually tendered his resignation.
