US Pursues Saudi Nuclear Cooperation Deal: Republicans Support, Democrats Oppose

The U.S. government has agreed to enter into a new nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia in 2026, drawing mixed reactions from the ruling and opposition parties within the United States. The agreement will support the development of Saudi Arabia's civilian nuclear program by providing U.S. technology and expertise. It also includes safeguards to prevent the diversion of nuclear materials for the development of nuclear weapons.

Republican lawmakers emphasized the importance of maintaining a strategic partnership with Saudi Arabia in the Middle East. Representatives Tim Burchett and Mark Alford noted the crucial role the U.S. Congress will play in the finalization of the agreement.

Democratic lawmakers warned that Saudi Arabia's uranium enrichment could trigger a nuclear arms race in the Middle East. Representative Gregory Meeks stated that if Saudi Arabia fails to comply with all protocols, neighboring countries such as Egypt might attempt to acquire nuclear weapons.

The Saudi nuclear cooperation agreement will be subject to congressional review and approval. Representative Mark Alford stressed the importance of ensuring Congress's role in the process of finalizing the pact.
