Lee Jin-seok faces scrutiny over committee assignment amid Democratic Party complaint, mentions President Yoon
On the 30th, the ruling and opposition parties clashed at the National Assembly Science, ICT, Broadcasting, and Communications Committee meeting over the assignment of former Broadcasting and Communications Commission Chairman Lee Jin-seok as a standing member. Amid a heated exchange between the two sides, the meeting was adjourned about an hour after it commenced, halting all discussions.
During the meeting, controversy arose over the appropriateness of allowing a suspect reported by the committee itself to serve as a standing member. The Democratic Party argued that it constitutes a clear conflict of interest for the reported individual to belong to the relevant committee, citing the fact that Committee Chairwoman Choi Min-hee reported Lee earlier this year on charges of perjury.
Rep. Lee Jin-seok countered that being a suspect does not disqualify her from serving as a standing committee member. She invoked President Yoon Suk-yeol, whose election was invalidated and remanded by the Supreme Court for election law violations, and asked if the Democratic Party's standards regarding her qualification should not also apply to the President. The conflict intensified particularly when Rep. Lee mentioned President Yoon.
