Mandatory Support for Workers and Regions Required Upon Coal Power Phase-Out
The National Assembly passed the 'Special Act on Support for Coal-Fired Power Plant Workers and Regions Facing Phase-out' on the 20th, mandating measures to ensure the stability of workers and local communities during the decommissioning process.
Operators promoting alternative industries that replace coal power generation and boost resident income or contribute to local economic development may receive employment and training subsidies, as well as relocation support grants from the state and local governments, if they retain or hire power plant workers.
Under the revised National Grid Act, private operators, in addition to Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), are now permitted to implement national grid development projects until December 31, 2029.
During the plenary session, renewable energy-related bills—centered on converting the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) system to a 'Long-term Fixed Price Auction System'—were also passed.
