With customer information leaked in a hacking attack targeting major commercial banks, police have launched an investigation. The National Police Agency's Cyber Terrorism Response Unit began a preliminary investigation on the 2nd into the information breaches that occurred at Shinhan Bank, KB Kookmin Bank, Hana Bank, and BNK Busan Bank. Among investigative agencies, the police were the first to act.

Shinhan Bank announced the previous day that the information of approximately 25,000 customers had been leaked, while KB Kookmin Bank confirmed through its internal inspection that the data of more than 100 customers had been leaked through an external intrusion. Hana Bank said an outside party had accessed its office documentation system (ODS), resulting in the leak of the personal information of 89 customers.

KB Kookmin Bank and Hana Bank explained that the incidents occurred in business support systems separate from their internet and mobile banking transaction systems, and that financial transaction information itself was not leaked.

The Financial Supervisory Service and the Financial Security Institute have dispatched personnel to the four banks where breaches were reported and are conducting on-site investigations.
