Hyundai Motor Could Secure Tesla-Scale Data by Equipping Hybrids With Autonomous Driving

If autonomous driving technology is fitted into new hybrid models, Hyundai Motor Group could secure data on par with Tesla. Hybrid-based autonomous driving is seen as an expansion card that dovetails with the group's multilayered strategy.

Shortly after taking office in October 2020, Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Eui-sun declared the group's full-fledged transformation into a smart mobility solutions company. In the process, securing autonomous driving technology emerged as a core task. As competition in autonomous driving intensifies under pressure from Tesla and Chinese companies, regulatory reform has also been flagged as a challenge for the group.

Hyundai Motor Group is pursuing an electrification strategy that includes expanding its hybrid lineup and production capacity, while adding extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) as a new option.
