October 17 Market Report: Micron Held Its Ground at a P/E of 12.5x

Even in a nervous market, stocks backed by solid earnings went their own way.

Most global major stocks stayed flat on October 16, 2026, with changes clustered between +0.04% and -0.03%. But a closer look at individual names shows the action was anything but quiet. The Nasdaq plunged 2.15% — its biggest drop since July — on concerns over AI investment debt and a surge in oil prices, meaning even the slightest moves in individual stocks are becoming a gauge of the market's stamina. Indeed, the line between gainers and losers that day was clearly drawn.

Major Stock Moves: Eli Lilly, Micron, and Visa Buck the Trend

Cisco109.85-0.03%$0.43T33.0
Tesla362.44-0.01%$1.43T335.6

The gainers' list shares a clear common thread. Eli Lilly gapped up nearly 3.5% from the previous close of 1,208.74 to finish at 1,251.61, while payment stocks like Visa and Mastercard drew support from the interpretation that consumer spending power remains intact even amid soaring oil prices. Micron, trading at a P/E of 12.5x — the lowest among large-cap semiconductor stocks — is seen as reflecting earnings backing from memory demand. By contrast, the losers' list was lined with semiconductor and networking equipment names such as Nvidia, Intel, and Cisco. The signal is that worries over the debt burdens of AI infrastructure investors immediately split companies into beneficiaries and casualties of that spending.

Big Tech Heavyweights Put to the Defensive Test Amid AI Concerns

Meta736.72-0.00%$1.88T27.8-256.0%

What stands out is the valuation gap. Alphabet and Amazon, at P/Es of 17.5x and 20.5x respectively, remain below the Big Tech average while posting EPS growth of 3,419.4% and 2,879.9%. Meta, meanwhile, saw EPS growth turn negative at -256.0%, the result of massive upfront AI infrastructure investments being booked as costs. Tesla, with EPS growth of -4,709.0% and a P/E of 335.6x, carries the most burdensome valuation among large caps. These differences show the market has already begun grading stocks on how quickly their AI investments will pay off.

A Temperature Gap Within the Semiconductor Sector

ASML1,657.44+0.00%$0.64T40.8
Intel95.37-0.03%$0.50T-

Even within the same sector, paths diverged. TSMC and AMD slipped slightly but held their distinct valuations at P/Es of 27.4x and 143.4x. Intel, in the red with no calculable P/E, fell 0.03% — the sector's biggest decline. Broadcom's P/E of 45.4x shows expectations of benefiting from AI custom chips are still priced in. Micron's lone advance is attributed to a combination of strong memory prices and low valuation. Compared with this week's Nasdaq slump of 4.48%, when the sector as a whole tumbled, the day's marginal moves read more as a sign that the correction is settling down.

Market Outlook: Earnings Season Opens a Fork in the Road

In the near term, oil prices and the AI debt debate will likely continue to weigh on the market. But what the day's data show is not indiscriminate selling — it's selectivity. Stocks combining low valuations with earnings resilience, such as Micron (P/E 12.5x), JPMorgan (14.1x), and Berkshire Hathaway (13.2x), held up relatively well in the downturn. Conversely, names with triple-digit P/Es — Tesla (335.6x), Palantir (172.8x), and AMD (143.4x) — are structurally exposed to steeper losses should their growth stories wobble. From an investor's standpoint, this correction looks like a chance to dust off the valuation filter. Picking the stocks that remain once the froth clears — that is the task the market now demands.
