Cheong Wa Dae: Wartime OPCON Transfer Not About Commanding US Forces
Appearing on SBS's 'Joo Young-jin's News Briefing' on the 20th, Sung Ki-hong, Cheong Wa Dae's senior presidential secretary for public communication, addressed the transfer of wartime operational control (the authority determining who commands South Korean forces in the event of war).
Regarding the return of the authority, he said, "Right now the US is in the driver's seat and we're in the passenger seat; this would mean we take the wheel and the US moves to the passenger seat."
He explained that this is merely an exchange of roles, not a proposal to issue commands to the United States.
