Chinese man in his 60s who murdered woman in her 40s on Jeju faces arrest warrant on revenge killing charges

A Chinese man in his 60s who stabbed his ex-girlfriend to death with a weapon on Jeju has been arrested by police. The Jeju Western Police Station announced on the 21st that it had sought an arrest warrant for Kang, 62, on five charges including revenge murder.

The charge of attempted arson of an occupied building was applied after investigators confirmed that Kang had placed thinner and a weapon in advance beside the stairs on the first floor of the 15-story officetel where the victim lived. During the crime, he placed the victim, identified only as A, in the passenger seat of a rental car parked on the street, stabbed her repeatedly with the weapon, and then fled, leaving her on the street.

Police obtained a statement that Kang had ripped the smartwatch off the victim's wrist near her residence; the torn-off smartwatch was later found on the building's first floor after A's death. Witnesses who called 112 reported seeing a man dragging a woman about 100 meters from the officetel building along the sidewalk while assaulting her.

The victim, A, had reported Kang to the police four times between last October and May of this year for stalking, sexual assault, and dating violence, but those cases were either resolved with warnings or closed.

After the crime, Kang fled and drank 220 milliliters of a 500-milliliter bottle of low-toxicity pesticide kept in his car; after his arrest, he complained of health problems and received hospital treatment.

Judging that the gravity of the harm, the brutality of the crime, and the sufficient evidence warrant it, the Jeju Provincial Police Agency plans to convene the Personal Information Disclosure Review Committee this week to decide whether to disclose the suspect's identity. If disclosure is approved, Kang's identity will be posted on the Jeju Provincial Police Agency website for 30 days.
