AI Portfolio Holds Steady Amid Market Crash, Retains +46.05% Return in Investment Report

A Day of Diverging US and Korean Markets, and This Portfolio Feels the Chill Too

On the 20th, the Seoul stock market was rocked as the KOSPI plunged more than 215 points in a single day to 5,552.74 (-3.73%), and the AI value investing portfolio absorbed the shock in full. Assets closed slightly lower than the previous day at $14,605, but the +46.05% return on initial capital still far outpaces the market average. In contrast to the US market, which found support with the Dow up more than 1%, the temperature gap between the two markets was reflected entirely in this portfolio's short-term volatility.

$1,400 Evaporated in a Week... But the Trend Hasn't Broken Yet

A look at the asset trend over the past five days warrants caution. Starting from $16,020 on October 14, assets fell in a stair-step pattern to $14,995 on the 16th and $14,308 on the 19th. That's a loss of roughly $1,400, or about 9%, in a single week. That said, the VIX fell more than 6% to 17.31, showing fear gauges are actually in stable territory, and the won-dollar exchange rate also eased to 1,326 in a sign of relief. The index plunge appears likely to be a flow-driven shock concentrated in specific sectors.

Holdings Diagnosis: The Light and Shadow of Valuation

AMD has surged to 2.7 times its purchase price, yet remarkably, its PEG ratio — which measures price level relative to growth — stands at 0.53, still below 1. However, with its headline multiple exceeding 130x, a slowdown in earnings momentum could trigger a sharp reversal. Micron, meanwhile, was bought additionally during the October 16 correction, at a point where its value relative to growth is extremely low. The strategy of betting on 'value over price' for the memory supercycle, exemplified by HBM, remains intact. Intel, on the other hand, remains the only holding trading below its purchase price, a reminder of the earnings uncertainty lurking behind valuation discounts.

Trade Review: The Rhythm of 'Profit-Taking and Rotational Reallocation'

There is a consistent logic in the recent trading pattern. NVIDIA, whose weight had swelled to 38% of the portfolio as a single stock, was partially sold to reduce risk, with the proceeds flowing into Micron, the stock with the lowest price relative to growth. Scaling back the 3x leveraged products SOXL and TQQQ was likewise a move to reduce exposure during a period of short-term volatility and lean into valuation attractiveness. The 'buy the dip' cycle — taking profits in rallies and targeting low prices through staggered purchases in corrections — is still in operation. That said, the pace of this week's plunge was faster than expected, so a further review of remaining leverage exposure will be needed in the next trade.

Outlook: The Oil Plunge and Rate Stability, and What Lies Behind Them

Two signals stand out in the macro data. WTI crude plunged 5.5% to $97.98, naturally raising hopes of easing inflation pressure, while the US 10-year Treasury yield slipped slightly to 5.117%, suggesting the valuation squeeze on growth stocks is entering a settling phase. However, Brent crude at $108.90 has widened its spread against WTI, indicating regional supply risks persist. On balance, the portfolio's semiconductor-heavy concentration fueled the short-term plunge, but the growth-adjusted value of individual holdings remains valid. It is also worth noting that Bitcoin rebounded to $82,990, suggesting the risk-on trend has not fully reversed. In periods of high index volatility, a static approach — verifying whether the rationale for holding still stands, rather than swapping stocks — may be the right call.
