An aggregation of public activity data from 175 companies shows that procurement contracts, hiring, and crowdfunding are forming a three-pronged axis, changing the survival strategies of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Procurement Market: A Stable Foundation for SME Specialists

A wide range of SMEs across various industries secured government procurement contracts through Nara Market, Korea's public procurement portal. The scope is broad, spanning environment and forestry companies such as Daehun Environment, Daekyung Forest Development, and Limited Company Forest Resource Development, as well as design and engineering specialists like Hanin Comprehensive Architects & Engineers Co., Ltd. and Hanbit Engineering Architects Co., Ltd. Technology-driven manufacturers and service providers such as Jinwoo ATS and Ace Tone Engineering also secured multiple contracts.

Notably, service-sector companies are entering the market. The participation of financial institutions such as Kyobo Life Planet Insurance, alongside companies like Wible Co., Ltd. and Saeroi Co., Ltd., shows that public demand has expanded beyond manufacturing and construction into diverse fields. Since contracts with the Public Procurement Service offer more reliable payment collection than ordinary private transactions, they serve as a practical shield for SMEs looking to solidify their revenue base. Entry into the public market also boosts creditworthiness, which is expected to act as a positive signal for subsequent private contracts.

Job Market: Demand for Technical Roles and Global Talent Stands Out

A look at job postings reveals many positions that demand both technical expertise and global capabilities. Renewpeople Co., Ltd. posted a string of openings, including a global game GM, a research institute head at an ITS company, a team leader for overseas sales of automotive defense PCBs, and an expatriate overseeing a production plant in Vietnam. A single employer recruiting for multiple roles simultaneously is a sign that the company has entered an expansion phase.

Technical positions also catch the eye. Human Consulting Group is seeking a payroll system developer versed in year-end tax settlement modules, while JSI Co., Ltd. is looking for an automation control programmer. Raon Search Co., Ltd.'s recruitment of an associate-level environment, health and safety officer for an affiliate of a fine chemicals manufacturer signals that ESG management is being reflected in hiring requirements. Flexible employment arrangements, such as freelance trainers and early childhood music instructors, were also observed, indicating that the job market is shifting from a full-time-centric model to a multi-layered structure.

Crowdfunding: Establishing Itself as a Consumer Validation Platform

Crowdfunding, centered on Wadiz, saw fundraising efforts across the board, from food products to AI tools. In the food category, a project featuring large peaches dubbed "king peaches" raised about 15.7 million won, while a charcuterie-focused project raised about 870,000 won. In the everyday goods category, an anti-theft travel sling bag secured about 2.92 million won and the Tenhead massager about 1.54 million won in backing.

The advance of AI-enabled products is particularly significant. An AI content production service raised about 3.81 million won, and a no-code AI service building tool raised about 1.8 million won. The emergence of even a short-form video production automation tool shows that generative AI has moved beyond the idea stage to become a product consumers actually pay for. Everyday consumer goods such as fashion items, glasses, and shower pads also steadily raised funds, cementing crowdfunding's place as a universal validation channel rather than a passing trend.

Key Takeaways and Outlook

Reading the three data sets together reveals a clear growth path for SMEs: validate marketability through crowdfunding, expand the organization through hiring, and secure stable revenue through procurement contracts. This differs in character from past growth models that relied on loans or becoming suppliers to large corporations.

Of course, there are still points to manage. The collected data included a certain level of fair trade commission sanctions and misconduct issues. Some companies were found to have faced sanctions related to subcontracting and advertising labeling, presenting the challenge that the faster the growth, the more robust compliance management must be.

The outlook is clear in its direction. Demand for AI-based products and global roles is expected to grow in both funding and hiring for the time being. The trend of a widening pool of companies participating in public procurement is also set to continue, with the public market becoming an increasingly important revenue pillar for SME specialists. For companies, the ability to assess their position using data and to combine funding, talent, and contract channels suited to their next stage of growth will be more important than ever.
