Man in His 60s Jailed for Driving 80 Meters Without a License
A man in his 60s who drove a truck about 80 meters without a driver's license has been sentenced to six months in prison. It was reported on the 31st that the Cheongju District Court Chungju Branch's Criminal Division 2 recently handed down the ruling to Mr. A, 63, who was charged with violating the Road Traffic Act (unlicensed driving).
Mr. A was caught driving a truck without a license on a road in Eumseong County, North Chungcheong Province, in April and referred to trial. It was a repeat offense. He had a record of multiple prior punishments, including fines, for unlicensed driving. The investigation found that he drove again while on probation for the same offense.
In court, Mr. A said, "I needed a car to make a living, but I failed the written license test more than 30 times and couldn't get a license." He went on to plead for leniency, saying, "The person who usually drove for me stepped away briefly, and I had no choice but to move the vehicle."
The court did not accept his argument. "Despite receiving leniency in the past, the defendant drove without a license again while on probation," the court pointed out. It also stated, "Even though the defendant took the license test several times and drove a relatively short distance, we cannot overlook the risk of accidents stemming from his repeated criminal acts and lack of compliance with traffic laws," explaining the reason for the prison sentence.
