Suwon Major Crime Investigation Unit Makes First Arrest Since Launch, Detaining Man in His 20s for Years-Long Cannabis Cultivation

The first person arrested by the Suwon Regional Major Crime Investigation Unit since its launch is a man in his 20s who cultivated cannabis for several years. The Major Crime Investigation Unit refers to a department specializing in investigating serious crimes such as murder and drug offenses. The arrested suspect, a man in his 20s, is accused of equipping his home in Seoul with specialized facilities and growing cannabis there for years.

The Suwon District Court issued an arrest warrant, citing "concerns that he may flee or destroy evidence." The Suwon unit's investigation team is also investigating the man's accomplices.

Earlier, the Seoul Major Crime Investigation Unit arrested a drug smuggler of Southeast Asian nationality as its first case after opening, followed by two more drug offenders. The Major Crime Investigation Unit launched on the 2nd with a planned staff of 1,900, currently staffed at 66 percent of capacity. The unit said each regional office has been equipped with video-recorded interview rooms, mobile analysis labs, and digital forensics facilities. Drug offenders have been arrested one after another since the unit's launch on the 2nd.
