Prosecutor Seeks 28 Years for Man Who Murdered Neighbor in Wonju
Prosecutors have asked the court to impose a 28-year prison sentence on a man in his 50s for murdering a neighbor he knew at a pub in Wonju, Gangwon Province. Mr. A was indicted for allegedly murdering neighbor Mr. B at a pub in Myeongnyun-dong, Wonju City, on December 11 last year. At the final hearing on the 19th before the First Criminal Division of the Chuncheon District Court's Wonju Branch (Presiding Judge Kim Ji-hyun), prosecutors sought a 28-year prison sentence for Mr. A (56), who was indicted for murder. Prosecutors requested the prison term along with a psychiatric treatment order, stating that Mr. A had a history of multiple violent offenses and committed the crime while gripped by delusions.
After the incident, Mr. A fled in a taxi, telling the driver he had killed someone. He was arrested by police at a nightclub shortly after the taxi driver reported him. Mr. A's defense attorney argued that while he intended to inflict injury, he lacked the intent to kill and was in a state of diminished capacity due to mental illness. In his final statement, Mr. A claimed the murder was an impulsive act after being slapped by the victim and that he experienced auditory hallucinations.
The first-instance sentencing hearing for Mr. A is scheduled to be held on April 16 at the Wonju Branch of the Chuncheon District Court.
