The US Department of Defense will officially designate Palantir's artificial intelligence (AI) system 'Maven' as a core capability for the entire military by the end of September. Under Secretary of Defense Steve Feinberg emphasized in a letter to Defense Department leadership that the adoption of the Maven smart system will provide warfighters with the latest tools necessary to detect, deter, and defeat adversaries across all domains. Maven is a command and control software platform that rapidly analyzes battlefield data and uses artificial intelligence to automatically identify potential threats or targets. The system has become a key AI operating system for the US military and is known to have been utilized in precision strike operations recently conducted in regions like the Middle East. The 'Maven' system analyzes vast amounts of data collected from satellites, drones, and sensors, showcasing technological advancements that significantly reduce processing time through AI.

Following this measure, oversight authority for 'Maven' will transfer from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) to the Department of Defense Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO). Palantir's contracts will be managed by the Army moving forward. The US Department of Defense has signed a contract worth $480 million with Palantir and subsequently expanded the contract ceiling to $1.3 billion for 2025. This demonstrates a policy to accelerate military modernization through artificial intelligence.

Regarding the ethical aspects of AI system operation, a UN expert panel has warned that AI targeting without human intervention could pose ethical, legal, and security risks. In response, Palantir has stated that its software does not make direct lethal decisions and that the ultimate responsibility lies with humans.
