Agent-First: Revolutionizing Process Design

AI agents, capable of independent judgment and task execution, are fundamentally transforming how businesses operate, ushering in a new 'agent-first' era. Unlike traditional static, rule-based systems confined to predefined parameters, AI agents dynamically reshape processes through real-time interaction, learning, adaptation, and optimization involving data, systems, people, and other agents.

In an 'agent-first' model, AI systems manage the actual processes, while humans focus on setting goals, defining policy constraints, and handling exceptions. Scott Rodgers, Global Chief Architect at Deloitte Microsoft Technology Practice, emphasized, "We need to shift the operating model to humans as governors and agents as operators." The adoption of AI agents automates repetitive daily tasks, creating an environment where employees can concentrate on more creative and strategic work.

However, for AI agents to function effectively, a redesign of processes centered around agents is necessary, rather than simply layering them onto fragmented legacy workflows. This requires machine-readable process definitions, explicit policy constraints, and structured data flows. Rodgers urged rapid redesign of operating models around agents, stating, "The real risk isn't that AI won't work, but that competitors will redesign their operating models while we're still experimenting with agents and copilots."
