Mobile Carriers to Apply Data Safety Option by Default to All LTE/5G Plans

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced the 'Direction for Tariff Reform to Guarantee Basic Communication Rights' on the 9th. From now on, the 'Data Safety Option' will be applied by default to all LTE and 5G plans from the three major mobile carriers, regardless of price.

The Data Safety Option (QoS) is a feature that allows users to continue using data at approximately 400Kbps without additional charges, even after exhausting their initial data allowance. This enables essential internet activities such as using messenger apps or searching maps.

For seniors aged 65 and over, unlimited voice and text messages will be provided, and the plan structure will be simplified, reducing the approximately 250 types of plans to less than half. A new 5G plan in the 20,000 won range will also be launched.

The Minister of Science and ICT stated, 'In the AI and digital era, data access is linked to the basic right to live daily life. Through this tariff reform, we will foster a mobile communication ecosystem that guarantees basic communication rights, ensuring that everyone can communicate and access information without being left behind.'
