Tennessee School Board Member Disciplined Over Remarks on Student's Appearance
A Tennessee school board member has been censured for making inappropriate remarks evaluating a student's appearance during a meeting. This incident highlights the impact of remarks by education professionals on students and the importance of accountability.
Washington County School Board member Keith Irwin told a student during a live-streamed meeting on April 2, "My God, you are hot. Did you know that? Damn. What school do you go to?" The remark came during the live-streamed meeting, shortly after the student inquired about career and technical education.
The Washington County School Board held an emergency meeting on April 8 and passed a motion to discipline Irwin. Keith Irwin claimed his remarks were taken out of context, stating, "I meant she was doing a good job." He has apologized to the student and her family for the remarks.
