Samsung Electronics is gradually phasing out its proprietary 'Samsung Messages' app. Starting around July 2026, Google's 'Google Messages' app will become the default SMS service on all Samsung smartphones, beginning with the U.S. market. Samsung is implementing a policy to transition users to Google Messages as their primary text messaging platform, a move that will alter how Samsung smartphone users send and receive messages. Newer Galaxy smartphones already come with Google Messages pre-installed, and the Samsung Messages app is no longer downloadable on many recent devices, signaling its discontinuation. However, the app remains functional on numerous older mobile phones.

During this transition period, users may receive warning text messages about the app's discontinuation, some of which have been mistaken for scams. One user in Running Springs, California, reportedly contacted Samsung to verify the legitimacy of such a warning text about Samsung Messages shutting down.

Google Messages, built on RCS (Rich Communication Services), offers features like read receipts, typing indicators, high-definition photo and video sharing, enhanced group chat capabilities, and Google's spam blocking. It also leverages AI, including Gemini, for features such as suggested replies and in-chat image generation. Its AI-powered fraud detection and robust spam filtering enhance security, protecting users from suspicious messages. As Samsung Messages is phased out, Google Messages stands out for its convenience, security, and support for the latest features.

Users are advised to back up any important conversations or data from the Samsung Messages app before it is completely removed.
