US to Reimpose Tariffs Under New System in July After Starting Refunds

Following a ruling that previously imposed US tariffs were unlawful, the US has begun the process of refunding those tariffs. The activation of this tariff refund system is a follow-up measure to the US Supreme Court's February ruling that the imposition of reciprocal tariffs is illegal.

The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will launch the tariff refund system starting on the 20th. In the first phase, priority will be given to cases that were imposed relatively recently and have not yet been settled, or those settled within 80 days. The scope of application will be expanded through system enhancements. Refunds will be available through an application process without requiring separate lawsuits. The CBP will support consolidated processing instead of handling each import declaration individually, and will also calculate and process any applicable interest.

Approximately 330,000 importers paid the tariffs deemed unlawful, covering 53 million shipments. As of April 9, over 56,000 individuals have applied for refunds.

The US administration plans to apply a new tariff imposition system starting this July, reimposing duties.
