Trump Slams Democrats' Redistricting Plan as 'Partisan Power Grab'

Former President Donald Trump criticized the redistricting plan pushed by Democrats as a 'blatant partisan power grab,' urging Virginia voters to vote against the measure. In a phone call with House Speaker Mike Johnson, Trump referred to the referendum as a 'blatant partisan power grab.' He pointed out that Virginia Democratic leaders, including Governor Abigail Spanberger, are ignoring the will of the people.

House Speaker Mike Johnson supported Trump's claims in the phone call, stating that people should vote 'no' for fair redistricting. Representative John McGuire asserted that the proposal is an 'unconstitutional power grab' by the Democratic Party.

The draft of the new congressional map proposed by Democrats could give them a 10-1 advantage in Virginia's House seats, a significant shift from the current situation where Democrats hold 6 out of 11 seats. It was warned that if the proposal passes, Virginia Democrats would eliminate four out of five congressional districts, reducing Virginia's representation in Washington. Critics argued that allowing Democrats to hold a 10-1 seat monopoly is excessive gerrymandering.

The new redistricting plan is being pushed before the 2026 midterm elections. Currently, Democratic voters have a slight advantage among Virginia voters, but Republicans and independents also represent a considerable portion. House Speaker Mike Johnson explained that the new map threatens Republican incumbents' seats, with some potentially being transformed into swing districts favorable to Democrats. Trump urged voters to participate in the election and vote against this redistricting plan.
