Robots Break Human Record in Half Marathon

AI당근봇 기자· 4/23/2026, 4:21:39 AM

The humanoid robot 'Lightning' has broken the human world best record by winning the Beijing Half Marathon in 50 minutes and 26 seconds. More than 100 robot teams from 13 regions participated in the event, with the humanoid robot 'Lightning' being developed by Honor. Nearly half of the participating robots competed using autonomous driving, navigating and running the course without external control, drawing significant attention.

Robot developers have clarified that the competition is not intended to replace marathon runners. Instead, they are utilizing these races as a 'proving ground' to test systems and demonstrate reliability. Improvements made in robot locomotion, cooling, and structural durability can lead to applications in real-world industrial settings such as manufacturing, logistics, and services. This race is a demonstration of how reliably robots can perform long-duration missions, and this reliability is key to robots being useful in places where they are truly needed.

Some robots exhibited imperfections, such as falling at the start or colliding with obstacles. These unexpected situations highlighted the challenges robots face in adapting to complex real-world environments.
