Lotte Fine Chemical Successfully Commercializes Ammonia Marine Fuel

Lotte Fine Chemical has taken the first step towards commercial supply of carbon-free energy by injecting green ammonia produced with renewable energy into an actual vessel as fuel. This is expected to influence the technological trends in the maritime industry, marking the commercialization of a new eco-friendly marine fuel technology.

Lotte Fine Chemical completed the commercial supply by importing green ammonia produced entirely with renewable energy in March and injecting it as fuel into an ammonia-powered vessel built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. This is recorded as the world's first actual commercialization case, moving beyond past research demonstrations.

Jeong Seung-won, CEO of Lotte Fine Chemical, assessed this commercialization as having historical significance for humanity. Kim Hye-jeong, Director-General of Maritime Logistics at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, expressed hope for Korean ports to evolve into hubs for eco-friendly marine fuels.
