Ulsan Port Achieves World First in Bunkering Ship with Ammonia
Ulsan Port successfully completed a demonstration of 'ship bunkering,' transferring ammonia from an onshore storage tank to a vessel, for the first time in the world on the 23rd.
The demonstration on this day was conducted on a medium gas carrier (MGC) built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. Ammonia is considered a promising fuel for carbon reduction as it does not emit carbon dioxide when burned.
The South Korean government has spent the past year working to establish registration standards and safety manuals for the safe refueling of ammonia. This demonstration was successfully achieved after repeated practice sessions involving the port authority, fire department, and classification societies.
This demonstration signifies Ulsan Port's readiness to transform from a hub for oil storage and transport into a port sought after by eco-friendly ships.
