Half-Price Travel Support Expanded, 300,000 More Accommodation Coupons Issued

The government is launching new policies to encourage eco-friendly consumption and tourism in an effort to overcome economic difficulties stemming from instability in the Middle East and sluggish domestic consumption. These measures focus on promoting an energy-saving consumption culture while simultaneously stimulating overall consumer sentiment.

Specifically, the government will invest a total of 22 billion won to offer discounts of up to 50% on major agricultural, livestock, and fishery products at large supermarkets and online malls during May and June. Eggs will be discounted by 1,000 won per 30-egg carton, and consumers will be able to purchase vegetables, fruits, chicken, and seasonal seafood at half price.

Discount benefits to spur consumption will also be strengthened. Starting this month, purchasing energy-efficient products using regional gift certificates will earn an additional point bonus of up to 5%, which will be provided as cashback. From May 1st to 5th, the discount rate for Onnuri gift certificates will be temporarily increased from the current 7% to 10%. From May 6th to 17th, the Carbon Neutral Point system will offer double points, increasing the reward for using reusable cups from 300 won to 600 won.

In the domestic travel and tourism sector, the focus is on promoting green consumption, particularly in areas outside the Seoul metropolitan region. The scope of benefits for the 'Half-Price Travel' refund, which covers half the costs of meals, experiences, and accommodation in depopulated areas, has been expanded to include public transportation usage.

The Dongaeng Festival, running until May 10th, will be organized as a 'Regional & Eco-Friendly Festival' and will include an energy-saving campaign. In conjunction with the Dongaeng Festival, shoppers at regional 'Baeknyeonggaje' (century-old stores), traditional markets, and Onnuri-affiliated merchants will receive statement discounts, including up to 5,000 won in cashback.

An additional 300,000 accommodation coupons will be supplied to depopulated areas outside the Seoul metropolitan region, and a 'Summer Accommodation Festa' will be held in June and July. During the 'Travel Spring' period, which lasts until the end of May, the government will provide 100% discount coupons for train fares on independent travel packages to depopulated areas. A 50% discount will also be offered for travel on theme trains such as the Donghae Santa Train and Seohae Golden Train. In May and June, owners of eco-friendly vehicles, including electric and hydrogen cars, will have their national park parking fees waived.
