Incumbent lawmakers will step down from their seats today, the 29th, to run in the local elections.
Eight members of the Democratic Party will join the ranks of resignees: Choo Mi-ae (candidate for Gyeonggi Governor), Park Chan-dae (candidate for Incheon Mayor), Jeon Jae-soo (candidate for Busan Mayor), Min Hyung-bae (candidate for Gwangju-Jeonnam Special Mayor), Wi Seong-gon (candidate for Jeju Mayor), Park Soo-hyun (candidate for Chungnam Governor), Lee Won-taek (candidate for Jeonbuk Governor), and Kim Sang-wook (candidate for Ulsan Mayor). Rep. Choo Kyung-ho of the People Power Party, a candidate for Daegu Mayor, also resigned today and is scheduled to register as a preliminary candidate with the election committee on the 30th.
If incumbent lawmakers resign their seats by May 30th, by-elections for their constituencies will be held concurrently with the local elections on June 3rd. If they resign after June 1st, the by-elections will take place a year later, next year.
The Democratic Party has strategically nominated Lee Gwang-jae, former Governor of Gangwon Province, for Choo Mi-ae's constituency in Hanam-gap, Gyeonggi Province; former party leader Song Young-gil for Park Chan-dae's constituency in Yeonsu-gap, Incheon; and Ha Jung-woo, former Senior Secretary for AI in the Presidential Office, for Jeon Jae-soo's constituency in Buk-gu-gap, Busan.
