Hassabis on AlphaGo's 10th Anniversary: 'AI Optimism,' Human Intuition Meets AI Creativity

Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, visited Korea to express his optimistic views on the future of AI. Looking back at the AlphaGo matches from a decade ago, he cited Move 37 by AlphaGo and Lee Sedol's Move 78 as prime examples showcasing AI's creativity and human intuition, respectively. Hassabis predicted that as AI evolves into Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), it will drive innovation in diverse fields such as science, medicine, energy, and new materials, ushering in a new era of human prosperity. He foresaw a future shaped by the partnership between human intuition and technology.

Lee Sedol, who directly experienced the AlphaGo matches, offered a more cautious perspective, suggesting the need for clarity on whether AI should be accepted as a collaborative partner and warning against relinquishing human thought and initiative to AI.

Hassabis praised South Korea's high capacity for technology adoption, seeing significant potential for the country to lead the AI industry. He also announced Google's plan to establish an AI campus in Korea.
