Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon Criticizes Special Prosecutor Bill: 'A Declaration of Standing Above the Law'
Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon issued a critical statement on the 1st regarding the push for a bill that would grant special prosecutors the right to withdraw indictments in trials related to President Lee Jae-myung, calling it a 'direct challenge to democratic constitutional order.' Mayor Park argued, 'They may avoid judgment in court today, but they will not be able to escape historical judgment and prison tomorrow.' He asserted, 'In the court of history, there is no appeal and power does not prevail.'
He appealed to the public to stop this 'outrageous act' that insults the constitution and the people, urging, 'A strong national resistance against this wicked deed must rise up starting right now.'
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party of Korea has proposed a 'Fabricated Indictment Special Prosecutor Act' that would allow a special prosecutor to investigate and maintain indictments in 12 cases related to President Lee Jae-myung. Legal circles have interpreted the bill as effectively granting special prosecutors the right to withdraw indictments.
