With the nationwide local elections just over a month away on June 3rd, fierce competition is anticipated across the Yeongnam region, a traditional conservative stronghold, as the candidate lineups for major regional leadership races are finalized.

In the Busan mayoral election, candidates Jae-soo Jeon and Hyung-joon Park are locked in a popularity contest, differing on key local issues such as the delayed opening of Gadeokdo International Airport, the legislative progress of the Busan Global Hub City Special Act, and the proposed administrative integration of Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam.

The Daegu mayoral race features Kim Bu-gyeom, former Prime Minister from the Democratic Party, and Choo Kyung-ho, former Deputy Prime Minister for Economy from the People Power Party. The candidates are competing on economic revitalization issues, with the undecided votes of the conservative base being a crucial factor.

For the Gyeongbuk provincial governor election, Oh Jung-gi of the Democratic Party and Lee Cheol-woo of the People Power Party are set for a rematch.

The Gyeongnam provincial governor election will be a three-way contest between Kim Gyeong-su of the Democratic Party, Park Wan-soo of the People Power Party, and Jeon Hee-young of the Progressive Party.

Six candidates are running in the Ulsan mayoral election, and ongoing efforts for candidate unification suggest that the outcome of such moves will be a key variable in determining the election results.
