Trax Exports Boom, Domestic Sales Lag

GM Korea sold a total of 47,760 finished vehicles in April, boosting its export performance. Domestic sales for the same month reached only 811 units. This marks the third time this year that monthly sales have surpassed 40,000 units, with overseas exports driving performance while domestic sales remain sluggish.

GM Korea's performance heavily relies on the strong export performance of two models: the Chevrolet Trax Crossover and the Trailblazer. The Trax Crossover has ranked as Korea's top-selling passenger car for export for three consecutive years.

Unlike the two models recognized in the global market, their lack of appeal to consumers in the domestic market reflects a decline in domestic interest in the brand itself. Concerns are being raised that the company could be reduced to a 'small SUV contract manufacturing base' due to a shortage of volume models and new vehicle lineups.

GM Korea has launched promotional campaigns starting in May, such as the 'Homecoming Festival,' offering a 1 million won incentive to existing owners purchasing a new vehicle. Critics point out that these are short-term measures and the company's domestic position could become precarious without long-term structural improvements.
