Unveiling the 'Why' Behind AI: Professor Choi Jaesik Boosts Korea's Credibility with Explainable AI

Professor Choi Jaesik of KAIST's Graduate School of AI has revealed that South Korea is being led to become a global leader in AI reliability through 'Explainable Artificial Intelligence' (XAI) technology. In an era where AI makes crucial decisions, it is difficult to gain public trust if the reasons behind those decisions are unknown. Understanding the AI decision-making process clearly is extremely important due to the potential for AI to make critical errors.

XAI answers the 'why?' question regarding AI results, either by making AI easily explainable from the outset or by breaking down complex AI operational mechanisms. 'High-risk AI,' which significantly impacts life or property, already has an explicit explanation obligation mandated by laws in the European Union (EU) and South Korea.

Professor Choi emphasized that South Korea's level of discussion on AI reliability and safety is not lagging, and that Korea is one of the leading nations in the field of explainability, serving as the chairman of Google Korea's 'Responsible AI Forum.' Korean research teams are participating in the establishment of international standards for explainable AI and are communicating to ensure Korea can play a leading role as a global research hub.
