Why Human Rest Is Crucial in the Age of AI
As AI agent technology advances, it's expected to ease the burden of human labor. However, there's a growing concern that without connecting this to human rest, it could actually increase fatigue. AI agents, capable of independent judgment and complex task execution, represent a new form of technology that can complete tasks without continuous human instruction. Autonomous AI bots have been anticipated to work 24/7, potentially freeing up personal time and leisure activities.
Yet, concerns have been raised that the advent of AI agents itself can exacerbate instability. Analyses suggest that AI technology, much like previous labor-saving devices, fails to fundamentally resolve human dissatisfaction or heal relationships. The human desire to constantly produce and consume cannot be satisfied by AI technology alone.
The necessity for human rest becomes even more urgent when attempting to apply AI's 'non-stop labor' to our lives. The potential of AI agents was glimpsed in Anthropic's leaked code as a feature named 'Kairos.' Kairos was described as an 'always-on' agent that continuously observes and learns users' computer workflows. It could reportedly learn a user's work methods to perform complex tasks such as drafting financial reports, responding to emails, and planning travel itineraries. This suggests a role similar to an AI companion that learns by observing and emulating a colleague's work.
AI agents can be seen as a technical realization of humanity's long-held aspiration to escape 'robota' (forced labor). The concept of robots, originating from Czech writer Karel Čapek's play over a century ago, has now become an everyday reality, with AI technology making these robots easily accessible to everyone. In some cities like San Francisco, AI companies are already actively promoting the adoption of AI agents, declaring an 'end to human employment.' They emphasize that AI can handle diverse tasks such as lead generation, appointment setting, meeting participation, and email management.
While these technological advancements offer hope for true rest and leisure, they also indicate that AI technology will not grant us rest unless we address the fundamental human problem of 'non-stop labor.' For AI agents to contribute positively to our lives, not only technological advancement but also societal and individual efforts to learn 'how to rest' must go hand in hand.
