Hoengseong Local Election Candidates' Pledges Analyzed
Ahead of the June 3 local elections, candidates Jang Shin-sang (Democratic Party), Im Kwang-sik (People Power Party), and Kim Myung-ki (Independent) are competing for the Hoengseong County mayor position. Hoengseong County is a super-aged region, with 4 out of 10 residents aged 65 or older.
Accordingly, candidates are targeting voters by presenting pledges to address the region's aging population and ensure future development. Candidate Jang Shin-sang proposes fostering rural tourism by combining history and culture, along with a pilot program for a basic income of 150,000 won per month for rural residents. Candidate Im Kwang-sik pledges to leverage his 30 years of public service experience to brand tourism and nurture the e-mobility industry. Candidate Kim Myung-ki, citing his experience in attracting 700 billion won in public tenders, promises a 'Hoengseong-style Happy Income' of 200,000 won per month and the establishment of a central medical and nursing hospital.
A public opinion poll conducted by Kangwon Ilbo from May 3-4 shows support for Hoengseong County mayor candidates at 35.5% for Jang Shin-sang, 32.3% for Kim Myung-ki, and 28.0% for Im Kwang-sik.
