Missouri Launches Medical Drone Program to Boost Rural Healthcare

Missouri is launching pilot programs for medical drones, leveraging cutting-edge technology. This initiative is expected to deliver emergency medical supplies more quickly to areas with limited hospital access, thereby improving patient access to care.

Healthcare access in rural America remains a nationwide challenge. Between 2010 and 2021, over 130 rural hospitals closed, forcing patients to travel an average of 20 miles farther for medical treatment.

Missouri University of Science and Technology, in collaboration with a drone company, is conducting test flights aimed at transporting essential medical materials such as blood, diagnostic specimens, and organs for transplantation between small communities and major hospital hubs. The program seeks to improve situations where missing the window for emergency sample collection could mean waiting a week for the next delivery, and to accelerate time-sensitive medical services like organ transplants.

The current test flights are under strict monitoring and utilize state-of-the-art technology. Following successful trials, the transport company and Missouri S&T plan to commence full operations this summer, initially focusing on the transportation of medical specimens.
