Pyeongtaek Eul, Busan Bukgu Gap By-elections: Candidate Unification Emerges as Key Variable

Candidate unification has emerged as a critical variable significantly influencing the election outcomes in the upcoming National Assembly by-elections for Gyeonggi's Pyeongtaek Eul and Busan's Bukgu Gap constituencies. While the candidate registration deadline on the 14th is expected to be a crucial juncture for unification negotiations, each party and candidate camp is engaged in a battle for dominance, coordinating complex vested interests.

Particularly in Busan's Bukgu Gap, analyses suggest that a victory is more likely if the conservative factions unite. However, fierce competition is underway between ruling People Power Party candidate Park Min-shik and independent candidate Han Dong-hoon.

In the Pyeongtaek Eul by-election, where a five-way race is anticipated, discussions are ongoing for unification among pro-government candidates. Nevertheless, verbal sparring continues between Democratic Party candidate Kim Yong-nam and Cho Kuk Innovation Party candidate Cho Kuk. The Cho Kuk Innovation Party has been on the offensive, demanding an apology from candidate Kim Yong-nam over remarks concerning the Sewol ferry incident. Kim's camp issued an apology, stating the remarks were 'immature,' but the Innovation Party attacked again, calling the apology 'insincere.'

Former Democratic Institute Vice Director Kim and candidate Kim Yong-nam are scheduled to hold a book concert on the 14th, with the votes of pro-Lee Jae-myung supporters also considered a major variable for unification. Each party is maintaining a stance of no concessions in their strategic maneuvers.

Attention is focused on whether the unification negotiations will reach a successful conclusion or head towards individual paths of survival.
