South Korea, US Defense Chiefs Discuss Security Issues, Focus on Command Transfer
South Korean Defense Minister Shin Won-sik and US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegemon met near Washington D.C. on the 11th (local time) to discuss key security issues, including the timing for the transfer of wartime operational control (OPCON).
The Strait of Hormuz transit stabilization issue was also addressed as a core agenda item during the talks. Following the recent confirmation that the HMM 'Namoo' vessel fire was caused by an external attack by an unidentified aircraft, this issue gained significant importance following US President Donald Trump's call for allies to contribute to resuming transit through the strait.
Secretary Hegemon stated, "The strength of alliances is important, and we expect our partners to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with us." In response, Minister Shin highlighted that South Korea is also increasing its defense budget and securing core defense capabilities in line with the US's 'peace through strength' initiative, stating, "We are doing our utmost to realize defense of the Korean Peninsula led by our own efforts."
Following the meeting, Minister Shin is scheduled to meet with the acting US Secretary of the Navy and the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
