People Power Party Claims Iran Responsible for Ship Attack; Democratic Party Denounces as Election Tactic
Tensions are escalating between the ruling and opposition parties over the recent ship attack incident in the Strait of Hormuz. The People Power Party claims Iran was responsible and criticizes the government's response, while the Democratic Party vehemently refutes this, calling it a political offensive ahead of the elections.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on the 4th that the HMM Namuho fire incident, which occurred in the Strait of Hormuz, was caused by an external impact from an unidentified flying object. Investigation teams confirmed a hull breach measuring 5 meters wide and 7 meters deep in photos taken from the lower part of the vessel.
People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyuk stated at a supreme council meeting on the 11th that the government must explicitly name 'Iran' as the attacker, citing reports from Iran's state broadcaster. He criticized the government's announcement of an "unidentified flying object" by likening it to an "alien UFO attack." The party characterized the government's response as a "delayed and downplayed response." Lawmakers from the People Power Party belonging to the National Defense Committee and the Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee urged the convening of a full committee meeting, alleging that the government concealed facts. The Reform Party sent a letter to the Iranian ambassador to South Korea urging strong diplomatic and legal action to protect Korean vessels.
This incident is also being cited as a geopolitical risk factor that could affect financial markets. Such escalations in diplomatic tensions can influence investor sentiment for shipping and energy-related companies.
