Australian AI Firms Explore Partnerships with Korean Manufacturers
Australian artificial intelligence (AI) startups are seeking new growth opportunities through cooperation with South Korea, a global leader in manufacturing. Australia is focusing all its efforts on strengthening national AI competitiveness as part of its drive to overcome the challenges of a small population and high labor costs, fostering AI startups that aim to solve pressing issues across various sectors. Australian companies have stated their need for robust manufacturing partners.
Hartcon, an Australian AI robotics startup, envisions a future where humans and robots collaborate on hazardous or strenuous construction sites, such as high-rise scaffolding. The robot arms mimic human actions, precisely drilling screws, moving tiles, or spraying paint onto walls. Mahdi Hassan, Hartcon's Hub Manager, explained that robots handling dangerous or arduous tasks would be a significant aid to humans, potentially leading to an increase in construction industry workers.
Shane Keating, founder of Countercurrent, is developing an AI device that analyzes ocean currents in real-time. This technology is expected to ensure safe navigation for vessels, while also contributing to fuel savings and carbon emission reductions. Keating described ocean currents as like highways on the sea, constantly changing, and explained that utilizing them allows ships to reach their destinations faster and more accurately, simultaneously reducing fuel consumption. He revealed plans to collaborate with Korean partners this year, a move considering Korea's standing as home to the world's largest shipbuilders and shipping companies.
While South Korea ranked 4th in the UNIDO's manufacturing competitiveness index, Australia ranked 34th. Korea's manufacturing value-added per capita is also more than three times higher than Australia's. The outlook for AI in Australia is bright. According to Crunchbase, there are over 1,300 AI startups in Australia that have attracted a total of $16.2 billion in investment. Australia's transformation from a resource-rich nation to an AI powerhouse warrants attention.
