Jung Won-oh: 'Flooding, Landslides During Mayor Oh's Tenure'; Oh Se-hoon: 'Jung Doesn't Know Redevelopment Basics'
On the 23rd, the first day of campaigning for the June 3 local elections for Seoul Mayor, Jung Won-oh, the Democratic Party candidate, and Oh Se-hoon, the People Power Party candidate, continued their verbal sparring by targeting each other's weaknesses. Jung focused on the issue of missing rebar at the GTX Samseong Station, while Oh highlighted delays in redevelopment projects in Seongdong-gu as ammunition for his attacks.
At a rally in Eunpyeong-gu that day, Jung referred to the GTX Samseong Station rebar issue and questioned the incumbent mayor's sense of responsibility. He pointed out that Oh had not visited the site for over a week since the media reports, arguing, "It is the responsibility of the incumbent mayor to go to the site immediately to check safety and establish countermeasures." Jung recalled the Sampoong Department Store collapse in 1995, noting that faulty rebar construction was a key cause, and asked, "What will happen if a major disaster occurs later? Who will be responsible?" He also listed incidents such as the Itaewon tragedy, the Umyongsan landslide, Gangnam Station flooding, and a sinkhole accident in Gangdong-gu, criticizing, "Why do such major disasters always happen during Mayor Oh's tenure?" Jung's claims require factual verification.
Oh attacked Jung's administrative record during his time as district mayor, launching a 'real estate incompetence' offensive. At a rally in Sinjeongnegeori, Yangcheon-gu, Oh argued that Jung must take responsibility for the delays in the redevelopment of seven zones in Seongdong-gu. He pointed out that residents of a specific complex could not register their properties because the completion approval had not been granted. Oh called Jung "irresponsible, incompetent, and a cowardly liar" for someone who claims to be a good administrator. He retorted, "If someone doesn't even know the basics of redevelopment and reconstruction, how can they do a better job as Seoul Mayor?" Oh's claims require factual verification.
From the outset of the election campaign, both candidates are making 'safety' and 'real estate development capability' key issues, engaging in debates surrounding Seoul's safety management and urban development policies. The claims made by both sides need to be fact-checked.
