Arrest Warrant Sought for YouTube Channel Head Accused of Spreading AI-Generated Fake News

Police have requested an arrest warrant for Kim Se-ui, the head of the YouTube channel 'Garo Sero Institute', on charges of spreading false information using artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Kim is accused of using AI-manipulated voice files and conversations to disseminate claims that actor Kim Soo-hyun dated actress Kim Sae-ron since they were minors. This alleged dissemination has reportedly caused significant damage to Kim Soo-hyun's acting career, including the cancellation of appearance contracts and involvement in lawsuits for damages.

This case highlights the destructive potential when 'cyber leeches', individuals who spread falsehoods for subscriber profits, combine with advanced technologies. They have generated numerous victims through indiscriminate revelations and the dissemination of false information. The incident where YouTuber Ttuyang, with 13 million subscribers, was extorted of 55 million won by cyber leeches through threats also serves as an example. While they often claim to be serving the 'public's right to know', their primary motive is usually to increase viewership and pursue private gain.

As technology becomes more sophisticated, the public becomes more susceptible to believing fake information as truth. It becomes difficult to fully erase the stigma, no matter how strongly victims protest their innocence. Especially with the advancement of AI technology, discerning the authenticity of content is becoming increasingly challenging. It is crucial to establish countermeasures against such criminal activities amidst this technological progress. Judicial justice can be upheld by clearly demonstrating that the benefits gained from fake news are far outweighed by the penalties incurred for the crime.
