Stanford Analysis: AI Could Threaten First Jobs for Young People
Concerns that artificial intelligence (AI) will pose a significant threat to jobs overall have been overstated, according to an analysis. While evidence that AI will cause mass unemployment immediately is scarce, the technology may instead threaten the jobs of young workers in the early stages of their careers. A Stanford University study found that employment rates for young workers in jobs heavily exposed to AI significantly decreased after the spread of generative AI, a phenomenon not observed in jobs with less AI exposure. This suggests that AI is replacing the foundational tasks that young workers relied on as a stepping stone when they first entered the workforce.
