Gwangju District Mayor Candidate Under Police Investigation for Alleged Illegal Party Recruitment

A candidate for district mayor in Gwangju, running in the June 3rd local elections, is under police investigation amid allegations of violating the Public Official Election Act during a party membership recruitment drive.

According to Yonhap News reports on the 28th, a local police station in Gwangju has received a complaint against Candidate A, who is running in the district head election, concerning illegal party member recruitment.

The complaint alleges that Candidate A offered millions of won in cash and valuables to a specific individual in January of last year in exchange for recruiting 900 eligible party members on their behalf. Police have begun fact-finding investigations based on the complaint's contents.
