As the European Union (EU) adopts a tougher stance on trade and investment relations with China, Beijing has immediately retaliated with a warning of countermeasures. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated that if the EU unilaterally introduces new trade measures or discriminatory practices, China will resolutely counterattack and take effective measures to protect its legitimate rights and interests.

The European Commission's Directorate-General for Competition has pointed out that trade and investment relations with China are unsustainable. China has made it clear its determination to defend its legitimate rights and interests, signaling that it will take effective countermeasures against unilateral EU actions.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce expressed its hope that the EU would adhere to World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, uphold free trade and fair competition, and oppose protectionism and unilateralism. It added that communication channels between China and Europe are smooth, and both sides are exploring the establishment of trade and investment consultation mechanisms and engaging in related dialogues.

The issue of trade imbalance with China is scheduled for further discussion at the G7 summit and the EU summit to be held next month.
