Lawmaker Park Dae-chul Proposes Election Law Amendment Bill to Abolish Early Voting
Lawmaker Park Dae-chul of the People Power Party introduced a bill on the 18th to amend the Public Official Election Act, which proposes abolishing the current early voting system and extending the main voting period to two days. A total of 25 individuals, including Rep. Park Dae-chul, participated in proposing this bill.
The amendment primarily aims to abolish the early voting system and instead extend the main voting day, currently set for one day, to two days. It also includes the reintroduction of the absentee voting system. If the amendment is passed, early voting will not be implemented in national elections, and the main voting will take place over two designated days.
This bill's introduction comes as reform discussions for the National Election Commission have intensified following the ballot shortage incident during the recent June 3rd local elections, and it is the first time an amendment bill seeking to abolish the early voting system has been proposed. It is drawing attention as to whether this could serve as a starting point for improving the election system, which has become a matter of public interest.
