The Democratic Party of Korea has set the end of this month as the deadline for negotiations on the allocation of standing committee chairmanships for the latter half of the National Assembly, stepping up pressure on the People Power Party to resolve disagreements over the Legislation and Judiciary Committee post. The Democratic Party has also hinted at the possibility of unilaterally pushing forward with the assembly’s composition process if negotiations break down.

The ruling and opposition parties are continuing negotiations for the latter half of the Assembly's composition, but the talks are failing to narrow the gap in their positions due to the People Power Party's demand for the Legislation and Judiciary Committee chairmanship. While the Democratic Party had initially urged the completion of the assembly's composition, setting today as the negotiation deadline, the negotiations remain at a stalemate due to the People Power Party's steadfast stance.

Traditionally, the National Assembly has allocated standing committee chairmanships through negotiations between parliamentary negotiating bodies. In the current composition negotiations, the momentum has weakened as disagreements between the ruling and opposition parties over the Legislation and Judiciary Committee chairmanship remain unresolved.

The Democratic Party insists on taking the Legislation and Judiciary Committee chairmanship, citing past precedent. The People Power Party argues that as they are not the majority party, they must secure the chairmanship for the sake of balance in the National Assembly's operations. This disagreement is disrupting plans to finalize the assembly's composition by the end of June.
