Senior Economic Policy Secretary Kim Yong-beom Assesses Korea's Economy as 'Peak Boom'

Kim Yong-beom, Senior Presidential Secretary for Economic Policy, has described the current South Korean economy as a 'peak boom,' emphasizing the need to distribute corporate profits and fiscal capacity to vulnerable groups and future growth industries, in addition to normalizing real estate taxes. This diagnosis of the economic situation is positive, highlighting the necessity for broader benefit distribution.

In a Facebook post on the 20th, Kim Yong-beom stated that key economic indicators such as stock prices, operating profits, tax revenue, and the current account balance are all moving in a favorable direction. He projected that this year's nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate would surpass double digits. While evaluating the current economic boom as 'real and not an illusion,' Kim also pointed out that citizens are not yet feeling these benefits translated into their daily lives.

Kim Yong-beom anticipates that luxury consumption may rebound in the latter half of the year, with a potential rekindling of real estate buying sentiment, and views the end of the year and early next year as 'critical junctures.' He suggested that people's behavior could change due to bonus payouts, wage increases, and inflows of export payments, and stated that normalizing real estate taxation, along with a rational adjustment of property and capital gains taxes, is necessary.

Kim warned that a boom would not last long if national wealth generated by the semiconductor industry is absorbed by untaxed real estate gains, or if the fruits of growth are concentrated among a few. He asserted that connecting fiscal capacity and corporate profits to young people, vulnerable classes, and future industries could serve as a starting point for exiting the low-growth tunnel. Kim concluded his post by stating that a record boom requires commensurate imagination and the execution power to turn that imagination into reality.
