PPP's Jang Dong-hyeok Makes Moves to Hold Onto Party Leadership

Following calls for his resignation after the June 3rd local election defeat, People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok has begun making a concerted effort to maintain his position as party chairman.

Some senior lawmakers within the party expressed concern that the current party membership structure could lead to chaos instigated by hardline supporters if a national convention were to be held. They indicated a perception that preparing for the 2028 general elections would be difficult under the current leadership system.

A source close to the pro-Yoon faction raised issues regarding the timing of a national convention, stating that any leader elected now would only serve until August of next year, making it difficult to exercise the leadership necessary to guide the party toward the 2028 general elections. This source argued that a new party leader should be elected through a national convention capable of exercising nomination rights for the general elections, after establishing an emergency committee to reform the party's structure.
