Microsoft CEO Criticizes AI Tech Monopoly
Microsoft (MS) CEO Satya Nadella has criticized the monopoly of AI technology, urging for more affordable models and expanded user choice. Nadella pointed out that some AI companies, while warning of safety risks and potential job losses, are pursuing business models that demand massive computing resources. He stated that the public will not accept a situation where a few models and companies monopolize global learning. The WSJ interpreted his remarks as targeting companies developing proprietary, cutting-edge AI models.
Nadella emphasized that AI should not be viewed merely as a tool for cost reduction or workforce downsizing. He believes that sustainable growth for the AI industry is difficult without public trust, and that people must feel they have control over AI and economic opportunities related to it.
Microsoft has recently released a series of low-cost AI models and unveiled its autonomous AI agent 'Copilot Co-work,' allowing users to choose from various AI models based on their tasks. Nadella's remarks drew attention given Microsoft's status as a key partner of OpenAI and its large-scale contract with Anthropic. However, Microsoft stated that this shift in direction is not aimed at specific companies and that its existing partnerships will continue.
