Over 10 Chinese and Russian Military Aircraft Enter South Korean ADIZ; Air Force Scrambles in Response
South Korean fighter jets scrambled to respond after more than 10 Chinese and Russian military aircraft entered the country's Air Defense Identification Zone (KADIZ) on the 27th. The KADIZ is not South Korean sovereign airspace but a zone established by the South Korean military for the identification and control of foreign military aircraft.
The South Korean military identified and tracked the aircraft prior to their entry and dispatched Air Force fighter jets to take necessary measures, including surveillance and warnings. According to military authorities, there was no infringement of South Korean airspace by the Chinese and Russian military aircraft.
Entry into an Air Defense Identification Zone (KADIZ) itself does not constitute an infringement of sovereign airspace under international law.
