Autistic Boy Suspended for Shaping Sandwich Like a Gun, Sparking Outrage

A first-grader at Sarah Harp Elementary School in Fayette County, Georgia, who has autism spectrum disorder, was suspended from school for pointing a sandwich shaped like a gun at a friend during lunchtime.

His parents, Kristin and Juan Medina, argue that the school's disciplinary policies do not sufficiently consider the child's disability. They explained that their son's autism makes it challenging for him to grasp social norms and recognize when certain behaviors are inappropriate. Father Juan Medina acknowledged that discipline might be warranted for certain issues, such as physical contact during gym class, but stated that punishing an act stemming from imagination is inappropriate. He also added that while weapon-related discussions are forbidden at home, autistic children have limitations in filtering external stimuli on their own.

According to the Medina family, John Medina has received approximately 15 suspensions and over 20 disciplinary actions since 2023. The parents report that these frequent punishments are causing their son to experience emotional alienation.

The Medinas emphasized the need for educational guidance that explains the inappropriateness of the situation, rather than simple isolation. They also stated that the current discipline-focused policy needs improvement to ensure children are protected and can develop social skills at school.
